Roof collapses on Sylvan Beach business

SYLVAN BEACH Hobbs Home & Hardware store fell victim to the massive amounts of snow dumped on Oneida County over the past few weeks.

The stores roof collapsed around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and will be shut down for at least a week, said Dusty Parker, a mechanic for the store at the corner of routes 13 and 49.

Theres a lot of damage and were trying to get things sealed up, he said. Its just the snow ya know?

Parker said they lost about one third of the 100-foot by 100-foot building, and repairs will include a new roof.

Some of the stores merchandise including hardware, home improvement equipment and pet food was damaged when the roof caved in, he said.

The store, which also specializes in lawn and garden supplies and service work on landscaping equipment, had a similar problem last week when its greenhouse caved in because of the snow.

Owner creates glass-blown items for her Valley Junction bridal shop

As she obliged their requests and expanded her inventory, it wasn't long before she had a full shop of wedding accessories for sale or rent.

Raymond's journey to Valley Junction began when she took the glass items she made and her glass-blowing equipment to an arts and crafts fair at Park Fair Mall at Sixth and Euclid avenues in Des Moines one fall several years ago. That eventually led her to having a full-time business in the mall.

When the mall was sold a couple of years later she moved her business to Southridge Mall, where her husband had a shoe and luggage repair shop. About three years later they landed in Valley Junction. That was 19 years ago.

Nine years ago, Raymond and her husband bought a building on Fifth Street where they have side-by-side businesses.
